  1. We, like all good trade associations, recognize the importance of the
  2. press. Writers from major book authors to newsletter columnists are
  3. invited to join the ASP.
  4.  
  5. Here's the rules in detail with commentary:
  6.  
  7. - All applicants and Associate Members must be, and continue to be, people
  8.   dedicated to the advancement of the shareware principle and the
  9.   supportive of the aims and goals of the ASP.
  10.  
  11. - All Associate Members will receive a subscription to the ASPects
  12.   monthly newsletter and have access to the members only Sections and
  13.   Libraries 10, 11, and 12 of the ASPFORUM on CompuServe. They will also
  14.   receive the back issues of ASPects on disk.
  15.  
  16.   10 is for Member-to-Member communication of business and programming
  17.   questions, offers, and general discussion.
  18.  
  19.   11 is for Policy and ASP Political topics. The ASP is an evolving
  20.   organization and there is always lively discussion here.
  21.  
  22.   12 is for Official Business. ASP Membership meetings are conducted here.
  23.   Election of officers and all rules are debated here before voting. As
  24.   Associate members, you are invited to take part in these talks.

  26. - Press Members will be included as a choice in the monthly Group Mailing.
  27.   This mailing of disks from authors to Vendor, BBS, Press, and User Group
  28.   members is funded by the authors involved. This has become a principle
  29.   method for ASP member Authors to distribute their software.
  30.  
  31. - Press Members will be able to use the ASP logo to describe themselves as
  32.   Associate Members.
  33.  
  34. - A list of Associate Members will be kept current and made available to
  35.   ASP Members and the public.
  36.  
  37. - All Associate Member applications will be reviewed by a committee that
  38.   will judge whether the minimum requirements are met. If there is a
  39.   negative disposition, the Board of Directors will automatically review
  40.   the committee's actions.
  41.  
  42. - $50/year dues - prorated 1/2 for members joining after September 1.
  43.   Dues billing is done in January of each year. Some might ask why the
  44.   ASP has the "nerve" to ask dues of the press. There are 2 reasons for
  45.   this:

  47.   - The ASP is member-funded and composed of many small businesspeople.
  48.     The dues for Press Members is aimed to cover the cost of ASPects and
  49.     administrative costs.
  50.  
  51.   - There are many ersatz press people. By charging a support fee we hope
  52.     to eliminate the many who would join the ASP simply in order to get
  53.     the monthly Group Mailing from authors.
  54.  
  55. - In case of a rejection for Associate Membership, the submitted dues will
  56.   be returned minus a $15 processing fee.

  59. - At the minimum, the applicant must have published works (books or major
  60.   magazine articles) that have explained the shareware concept and the
  61.   necessity for registration.
  62.  
  63.   Sporadic articles in newsletters and the like are generally not
  64.   considered to be sufficient for membership but regular columns
  65.   are sufficient.

  67. - The Membership Committee will receive sample published works to
  68.   help its process. Applicants need to send original or copies of some of
  69.   their work for us to look at.
  70.  
  71. - The Member must continue to be an active writer (generally considered
  72.   to write at least one major item per year).
  73.  
  74. - One copy of each article or book must be forwarded, free of charge, to
  75.   the Executive Director for the ASP's files. We will use this to educate
  76.   our members about your work and help suggest which Author Members should
  77.   send you software directly.

  79. - Associate Members are Non-Voting members of the ASP.

  83. At the time of this writing, the ASP is working on two major projects, a
  84. printed catalog and a CD-ROM of all ASP Authors works. It is expected that
  85. both of these source materials will be available to Associate Members at
  86. reduced cost.
